#1609 Areté +1° #216: Miracle Mornings

S.A.V.E.R.S. & the Three U’s

Hi, this is Brian.

Welcome back to another Areté +1°, a micro-chapter from Areté: Activate Your Heroic Potential.

451 ideas. This is one of my favorites from one of my favorite human beings on the planet.

MIRACLE MORNINGS
S.A.V.E.R.S. & THE THREE U’S

Hal Elrod is an incredibly inspiring human being.

At twenty years old he was hit head-on by a drunk driver. At seventy mph. (Ouch.)

He was found dead. (Yikes.)

After six minutes of that (near-)death experience, he spent several days in a coma and awoke to discover he had suffered brain damage and was told that he may never walk again.

He defied the odds and proved that we’re all capable of overcoming obstacles while creating the life of our dreams.

Years later, he found himself in a funk and discovered that if he could get his morning routines dialed in, he could activate his Heroic potential.

Then…

He wrote a book called The Miracle Morning, in which he shares “The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life Before 8 AM.”

The book has been translated into thirty-seven languages and has transformed millions of people’s lives. It’s fantastic.

As you’d expect, Hal tells us that our AM Bookend is really important. Great lives are created one great day at a time. And great days are created one great MORNING at a time.

How do we make tomorrow morning a miracle?

Hal tells us we want to integrate six key practices: silence, affirmations, visualization, exercise, reading, and scribing.

Put those all together and you get a miracle morning. You also get the acronym S.A.V.E.R.S.

Check out the Philosopher’s Notes and book for more on all that.

In this +1°, I want to focus on one of my all-time favorite habit-building mental frameworks. We want to have this wisdom in mind as we navigate the process of changing our lives.

So…

Hal has a GREAT chapter outlining the three phases of habit creation—each around ten days long.

He tells us that the process goes like this…

First, the new habit is UNBEARABLE.

It’s a pain. We don’t like doing it. At all. But we persist.

The second phase is UNCOMFORTABLE.

It’s not quite as bad as the first phase but not quite awesome… yet!

The third phase is when we become UNSTOPPABLE.

We feel the benefits of engaging in the habit, don’t need to use so much willpower to get ourselves to do it, and we are now UNSTOPPABLE.

Unbearable.

Uncomfortable.

Unstoppable.

Yep. That’s about right.

I say: Let’s have THAT in mind as we move from Theory to Practice to Mastery and make our entire lives a miracle, Hero!!
