The Power of a Pedometer and Other Measuring Devices

Did you know that one of the easiest ways to optimize any aspect of your life is to simply measure it?


In fact, this effect is so powerful that it’s actually a big issue in research studies.

Get this: Simply asking people to pay attention to something IMMEDIATELY and SIGNIFICANTLY improves their behavior on that activity.

For example, did you know that giving someone a pedometer as part of a randomized, controlled study will increase their movement by 27% and result in them walking at least one extra mile per day on average?


Crazy but true.

Makes you want to get a pedometer and start measuring your steps, eh?

Today’s +1: Two parts.

Part 1. You may want to go out and get yourself a little pedometer (I use a simple, old school, super low tech Omron pedometer in my pocket because I don’t like being tethered to my phone).


Part 2. Think about what other areas of your life you’d like to improve. Know that simply MEASURING your behavior in that area—whether it’s how you eat or move or sleep or spend your time—will IMMEDIATELY and SIGNIFICANTLY improve it.
