~ Esther and Jerry Hicks from Money, and the Law of Attraction
CONFESSION: Writing a Note on this book is nearly impossible. Why? Cuz my whole book is basically one long underline with asterisks flying off every page! (Alas, I’ve pulled out some of my favorite Big Ideas but know that I’ve *barely* scratched the surface of this awesome book. If it’s resonating, me thinks you’ll dig it. :)
And, now back to the show: Esther and Jerry Hicks are quickly becoming two of my absolute favorite teachers. As I mention in my Note on Ask and It Is Given, the idea of channeling Non-Physical beings kinda freaked me out at first. (Still opening my mind from my Catholic upbringing. :) At this stage, I’m much more open to the idea and, to be honest, I don’t care where they get this wisdom because it’s *amazing*. Truly remarkable.
With so much to cover, let’s jump in!
Shortage of Connection
“Shortage of time is not your problem. Shortage of money is not your problem. Shortage of Connection to the Energy that creates worlds is at the heart of all sensations of shortage that you are experiencing.”
Wow. Well, that puts it in perspective, eh? Are you feeling a shortage in your life right now? Know, as Abraham-Hicks so beautifully says, it’s your “Shortage of Connection to the Energy that creates worlds” (!!!) that’s at the root of your problem.
Think about that. “The Energy that creates worlds.” It’s the same force that beats your heart and grows your hair and digests your food (AND gives you flashes of inspiration of your ideal life!) that also continues to create stars and galaxies and who knows what else at the edges of our universe.
Now, I personally don’t like to argue or fight with that force. It wins *every* time. :)
So, the real issue at the heart of any fear/suffering/lack you may be experiencing has nothing to do with a bad economy or a bad childhood or a bad hair day. It has to do with you. And, specifically, with your connection to your Highest Self/Source/God/Whatever-You-Want-To-Call-It.
And, this great book is basically all about helping us align with Source and become a magnet for all things good. So… How do we become that magnet and attract all the money and goodness into our lives?!? Let’s start with:
Your Lifetime Career
“If we were talking to you on your first day of physical experience, we could be of great advantage to you because we would say, ‘Welcome to planet Earth. There is nothing you cannot be or do or have. And your work here—your lifetime career—is to seek joy.’”
Love that. How’s that for a career choice?!? Where was the career counselor in high school/college who said: “You? Your lifetime career? Definitely to seek joy. Yep, that’s it. Seek Joy.” :)
I didn’t have that experience. (Somehow I wound up as an accountant out of UCLA. Huh?) Thankfully we’ve got Esther & Jerry to help guide us now. :)
Now, you might want to re-read that quote. And then take it LITERALLY. They truly believe that your PRIMARY job is to seek joy. Think that’s nonsense? Well… You might want to re-consider it.
Joseph Campbell and Carlos Castaneda come to mind here. First, Esther & Jerry have been deeply influenced by Joseph Campbell—the 20th century mythology guru who brought us the “hero’s journey” and the admonition to “Follow your bliss!” (See Notes on him, btw.)
Now, while he says, “Follow your bliss!” they say, “Follow your joy!” Same thing. Here’s the interesting thing: Did you know where Campbell got his “Follow your bliss!” line? (Hint: It’s straight from Hinduism.) Campbell was a scholar of Sanskrit and here’s how he describes it in Power of Myth (see Notes):
“Now, I came to this idea of bliss because in Sanskrit, which is the great spiritual language of the world, there are three terms that represent the brink, the jumping-off place to the ocean of transcendence: Sat, Chit, Ananda. The word ‘Sat’ means being. ‘Chit’ means consciousness. ‘Ananda’ means bliss or rapture. I thought, “I don’t know whether my consciousness is proper consciousness or not; I don’t know whether what I know of my being is my proper being or not; but I do know where my rapture is. So let me hang on to rapture, and that will bring me both my consciousness and my being. I think it worked.”
(That’s hot.) Continuing this Follow Your Joy as the key to success business, Carlos Castaneda likes to say that any path is one of a million paths and that we shouldn’t follow a given path unless it has “heart”—that is, unless it feels good… unless it gives us joy… unless we’re following our bliss. He says: “But how will I know for sure whether a path has a heart or not?’ Anybody would know that. The trouble is nobody asks the question.”
How about you? You asking the question? And do you have the courage to make a career out of living the answer? (Good. :)
Most Valuable Skill
“The most valuable skill that you could ever develop is the skill of directing your thoughts toward what you want—to be adept at quickly evaluating all situations and then quickly coming to the conclusion of what you most want—and then giving your undivided attention to that.”
Well, if there’s ONE dominant theme throughout ALL the great wisdom teachers, it would be the fact that our thoughts determine our reality/happiness/everything. See Notes on Buddha, Aurelius, Rumi, Seligman, The Gita, Frankl, and, well, pretty much all of them for proof of the power of our thoughts.
How about you? Are you in control of your thoughts? Or, does your mind run from one thing to the next—usually stuff you wouldn’t *choose* to think about so much?
As Esther and Jerry make clear: The ability to direct your thoughts toward what you want is THE most valuable (!) skill you could ever develop. And, to develop ANY skill, you’ve gotta practice. Are you practicing?
Magnificent Amounts of Money
“Most of you are much closer to a financial fortune than you are even allowing yourself to purely desire, because, in the thought that it might come, you right away begin thinking of how disappointed you will be if it does not come. And so, in your lackful thought, you do not allow yourself to desire or to expect anything magnificent in terms of money; and that is the reason why, for the most part, you are living rather mediocre financial experiences.”
Can you feel the truth in those words? Isn’t it true that the moment we start to get giddy about something (not just money but a better relationship, body, whatever), we immediately imagine not getting it and then never really allow ourselves to get super passionate.
That ever happen to you?
The Reality of Your Life
“People talk about the reality of their life as if it is important. And we want you to understand, it’s only the temporary indicator. Do you go to the gas station—your gas gauge is on empty—do you go to the gas station and look at your gas gauge in horror? ‘How did this happen? [Fun] Why, why, why did this happen to me?’ Do you lay your head on the steering wheel and just sob? ‘Oh, look what it’s come to. [Fun] I’m finished. I’ve lived all of this life, and look where I am.’ Or do you just fill up.”
That’s classic.
So, your life is either PHENOMENAL right now or it might suck. In either case, it’s nothing (!!) more than a *temporary* indicator of how connected you are to Source. Just like your gas gauge tells you whether you have a full tank or not, your life circumstances, and particularly your emotional well-being, tells you how full your God/Source tank is.
Now, you’d NEVER get pissy with your gas gauge for letting you know you’re running low on energy. So why in the world would you get upset with yourself when your emotional fuel gauge is letting you know you’re a little off? That’s not a god idea. Just FILL UP! :)
Meditate, dance, exercise, eat well, laugh, play, create, journal, read, smile, love, breathe deeply, pet your dog, think positive thoughts, imagine your ideal future with such intensity that you can FEEL it, do whatever you need to do to FILL UP. But don’t (pretty, please) look at your “gas” gauge in horror. No need to sob. Just fill up. :) … And, start:
Telling a New Story
“You have to begin to tell the story of your life as you now want it to be and discontinue the tales of how it has been or of how it is.”
I love that. What story are you telling yourself? Are you *constantly* dredging up all the old hurts and wounds from a bad childhood or ended relationship or illness or any of the millions of things we can all bitch about?
Well, if you keep on doing that, you’re never going to create you’re ideal life. EV-ER.
Solution: Stop telling your old story. Start telling your NEW story. Starting now.
Start catching yourself when you’re chatting with friends and the old story starts to come out. Notice it. Shift to the NEW story. When I was first getting into this idea I’d say things like, “Oh! Well that’s my old story. The new story is…”
Powerful stuff. In another Note we’ll go into the science of how all this stuff works. It’s called “neuro-plasticity” and basically means that our brains are malleable—we can (literally) re-wire our brains/minds/consciousness. Super quickly: Imagine going sledding after a fresh snow. Nothing but pristine white snow. You walk up with your sled and take the first trip down for the day. You go this way and that and get to the bottom. Your course was pretty random, yah?
Then, you walk back up again. And you come back down. Odds are you’re going to hit some of the grooves you created from the first trip. You do it again and again and again.
Now, by the end of the day, you’re likely to have grooved a pretty strong little sled-trail—making the odds that you head down the same route and wind up at the same destination PRETTY STRONG. Make sense?
That’s pretty much how our brains are. We’ve spent years/decades thinking the same thoughts. We’re GROOVED so strongly that when something happens we literally don’t even have to think for a moment for our old patterns to play themselves out. (Like taking the sled up for a ride at the end of the day with the tracks in place.)
The solution?
You’ve gotta put a road block up on the normal path. In this case, you’ve gotta STOP telling your old story and START telling your new. So, if you’re truly committed to creating your ideal life, STOP telling your old story. STOP STOP STOP. Don’t let a negative sentence complete itself. Instead, start telling the amazing story of your new, gloriously unfolding life. Starting Now. :)
And, here’s a cool way to help you do that:
Process of Pivoting
“So the Pivoting Process is simply: Whenever you recognize that you are feeling a negative emotion (it is really that you are feeling the lack of harmony with something that you want), the obvious thing for you to do is to stop and say, I’m feeling negative emotion, which means I am not in harmony with something that I want. What do I want?”
The Process of Pivoting is GENIUS. (Yes, all caps. It’s that good.)
The underlying philosophy of Abraham-Hicks is that we’re here in the world to feel good. We have an underlying freedom to choose how we want to live, and, they say, that as we make living with joy our top priority, we’ll experience an expansion of our spirit and growth toward higher and higher ideals.
Now, as we seek this joy and leverage our freedom to choose, learning to “pivot” is incredibly powerful.
Here’s the deal: Whenever you feel bad, you just learned something very important—you learned how you don’t want to feel and what you don’t want. Right? Now, in that moment of knowing what you don’t want, why not ask yourself: “Alrighty. So, I clearly don’t want that!! What DO I want?!?”
That very (!!) simple process of becoming aware of what you don’t want, acknowledging it and then asking yourself what you DO want is remarkably (!!) powerful. They call it “The Process of Pivoting.”
Try it right now.
What’s stressing you out?
You thinking about how you’re short of cash? Or that you’re unhappy in your relationship? Well, if you keep on unconsciously focusing on that, you’re pretty much going to continue to get more of it (a la the Law of Attraction we’ll cover in a moment).
If, however, you begin to consistently ask yourself “What do I want?” you’ll immediately raise your energy TOWARD that which you want rather than toward that which you don’t want.
Absolute Exhilaration
“Those moments in your life when you feel absolute exhilaration are moments of complete alignment with the Source within you.”
Oh, I love that.
When do you feel ABSOLUTE EXHILARATION?!?
Me? When I’m leading a discussion of these Big Ideas, having an inspired conversation with an awesome human being passionate about life and sometimes when I’m really in the flow writing a Note…
How about you?
… And, now the $100 million question and a key to putting Money, and the Law of Attraction to work: How do you get PAID to live from that place?
[I mention this word all the time, but you know the word enthusiasm comes from the two little Greek words en (within) and theos (God), right? When you’re enthusiastic (absolutely exhilaratingly beaming with life!), God’s flowing thru you. Fun.]
Socialization
“While your parents and teachers are, for the most part, well-meaning people, they are nevertheless more interested in your finding ways to please them than in your finding ways to please yourself. And so, in the process of socialization, almost all people in almost all societies lose their way because they are coaxed or coerced away from their own Guidance System.”
Powerful.
Have you noticed that, uh, most people around us are just a tad more interested in us pleasing THEM than they are in helping us and supporting us in discovering what pleases US? Funny how that works, huh?
All good, tho.
We just need to be aware of that and realize that our own intuitive sense of what is right for us is a like a muscle that’s atrophied from under-use. We just need to get out and put it to work! Hit the emotional guidance system gym. Get our sixth sense (our feelings!) looking *smokin’ hot*! :)
How?
Well, here’s a cool tip:
Emotional Guidance System
“You actually only have two choices in emotion: a better-feeling one or a worse-feeling one. So you could accurately say that there are really only two emotions, and you effectively utilize your Guidance System when you deliberately choose the better-feeling of those two options.”
Wow. That’s *really* cool.
So often we like to make things really complicated. The fact is, as Abraham-Hicks so beautifully states here, in any given moment you can really experience one of two emotions: a better-feeling one or a worse-feeling one. Love that.
So, how are you feeling right now?
From the bottom up you could be feeling totally helpless/depressed/ashamed/afraid/etc. or you could be feeling some jealousy or rage or worry or disappointment or frustration/irritation/impatience or pessimism or boredom or hopefulness or happiness or enthusiasm or passion or, at the HIGHEST end of your Emotional Guidance System you may be experiencing Joy/Knowledge/Empowerment/Love/Appreciation/Freedom.
So, where are you? Know that in this moment you have a choice to move UP that scale by choosing a better feeling thought that will lead to a better feeling emotion. Or you can stay where you are or move down by continuing to focus on the negative stuff.
(Always!) Your call.
Do the Things You Love To Do
“There is no better way to earn money than to do the things that you love to do. Money can flow into your experience through endless avenues. It is not the choice of the craft that limits the money that flows, but only your attitude toward money.”
So, what do you LOVE to do?
I’m talking about the kinda thing that you love SO much, you’d PAY to do it.
(You know, the stuff that makes you feel absolutely exhilarated!)
For me, it’s reading/learning/optimizing my life and inspiring others to live their greatest lives. I would literally pay to be able to do those things. (I’ve known this for the better part of seven years but it took me about that long to *really* believe I can get paid to do it.)
Back to you: What do you love to do? Do you think you can get paid to do it?
Know that, in the words of Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” And Richard Bach: “Argue for your limitations and, sure enough, they’re yours.”
