Greg Harden is one of the world’s greatest peak performance coaches.

He tells us that champions aren’t born. They’re built. He spent over 30 years building them at the University of Michigan where he worked with 400 future professional athletes, 50 NFL first-round draft picks, and 120 Olympians from over 20 countries. He gained national recognition when 60 Minutes Sports profiled him as “Michigan’s Secret Weapon.”

To put it in perspective, Harden has worked with seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady (who wrote the foreword to the book) and twenty-three-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps—two of the greatest athletes of all time.

You Have the Gift

I’ve tried to cover three important topics here, but please also remember what I didn’t say. In this whole discussion of ‘What makes them different?’ did I ever mention anything about 2 percent body fat, or a forty-inch vertical leap, or a 4.3-second forty-yard dash? I did not, and in fact, I can point out plenty of people who are blessed with such physical gifts who never become great at athletics or, sadly, at anything else in life.

Taken more broadly, I could just as easily talk about having an IQ of 200, or any other superhuman ability that only a few people are ever born with. It’s not about what God gave you—not even if you happen to have been born half-dolphin like Michael Phelps, or with the mental horsepower of a savant. It’s about how you choose to live your life every day:

  • being coachable and hungry to learn;

  • being committed to the process of continual self-improvement;

  • believing that you have that special ‘extra gear’ to call on when you really need it, and that win, lose, or draw, you’ll rise above fear and self-doubt (your greatest enemies) and give everything you’ve got, no matter the outcome.

These are the three things you need to be the absolute best, to be a meaningful force in the universe—not just in athletics but also in your career, in your relationships, in every single thing you do.

Throughout the rest of this book, I'm going to talk about some things amazing athletes have—you have them, too. They are inside you right now. You know they are.

So let’s find a way to make all those qualities the driving forces in your life. And you will be closer to unstoppable.”

What makes THE MOST ELITE performers different?

It’s NOT something reserved for the elite few.

Greg tells us that YOU have it, too.

Anders Ericsson, the guy whose research led to the 10,000-Hour Rule Malcolm Gladwell popularized tells us that we ALL have this gift.

In Peak, he tells us: “Why are some people so amazingly good at what they do? Over my years of studying experts in various fields, I have found that they all develop their abilities ... through dedicated training that drives changes in the brain (and sometimes, depending on the ability, in the body) that make it possible for them to do things that they otherwise could not. ... the clear message from decades of research is that no matter what role innate genetic endowment may play in the achievements of ‘gifted’ people, the main gift that these people have is the same one we all have—the adaptability of the human brain and body, which they have taken advantage of more than the rest of us.”

George Mumford echoes this wisdom in HIS great book, Unlocked.

He tells us: “You may be familiar with what Michelangelo said about his approach to sculpting. He didn’t actually create statues for which he is famous; rather, he ‘released’ them from the stone in which he worked. His process stripped away, laid bare. That is the process we all go through to unlock. We remove the extraneous, the layering of our conditioning and defenses, and the ways that we have been untrue to who we really are until we find what is authentic within us—an authenticity that is always there, waiting to be revealed.

I call this greatness inside of us the masterpiece within. We might also think of it as our essence. The people we most admire, who are accomplished, masters at what they do, are in touch with this essence.

But everybody has that masterpiece within them. We need to uncover it. The degree to which we can see it and let it express itself is going to be reflected in the quality of our lives. The masterpiece within is ours and for no one else. It is always unique. There’s only one; only one you.”

How do we unlock this potential?

Greg tells us that it all comes down to THESE three things:

  • “being coachable and hungry to learn;

  • being committed to the process of continual self-improvement;

  • believing that you have that special ‘extra gear’ to call on when you really need it, and that win, lose, or draw, you’ll rise above fear and self-doubt (your greatest enemies) and give everything you’ve got, no matter the outcome.”

When Opportunity Knocks…

“People talk about luck, but the luck I believe in happens when opportunity knocks on your door and you have already done the work required to make the most of it.

Because here’s the problem: If you think that whatever happens to you is just a matter of ‘good luck’ or ‘bad luck,’ then whenever you run into an obstacle, you’re going to believe that it’s out of your control. ‘I’m just a victim of fate!’

You don’t want to be that person.

You want to be the person who sees that obstacle as just another kind of opportunity. You want to believe that the hard work of practicing, training, and rehearsing for success will give you the right mindset to turn troubled times into valuable lessons that get you closer to your goal.

When opportunity and preparation come together, you can do almost anything. Being prepared for opportunity is a lot better than wishing, hoping, betting, or playing the lottery.

Ultimately, you must believe in something larger than luck. You must have the focus to set goals. And you must have the determination to work hard, to be deliberate and intentional in everything you do, so that you will be prepared when opportunity knocks.

Opportunity will knock. I guarantee it.

That’s from Chapter #4: “Control the Controllables.”

This is the chapter in which Greg walks us through Tom Brady’s UNBELIEVABLY inspiring story.

According to Wikipedia: “When he initially enrolled at Michigan, Brady was seventh on the depth chart, and struggled to get playing time. ... He worked closely with assistant athletic director Greg Harden, who met with Brady every week to build his confidence and to maximize his performance. Brady told 60 Minutes in 2014: ‘He will always be somebody I rely on for sound advice and mentorship. He has helped me with my own personal struggles in both athletics and in life. Greg really pushed me in a direction that I wasn’t sure I could go.’”

Brady was drafted as the 199th (!) pick in the 2000 NFL draft. Yet... He KNEW he was ready to take advantage of that opportunity. In fact, Greg tells us that Brady “famously told the owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft, ‘I’m the best decision this organization has ever made.’ Then he got to work.”

In Call Sign Chaos, the great U.S. Marine General Jim Mattis talks about being ready when an opportunity presents itself and quotes Winston Churchill to make his point.

Churchill once said: “To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered a chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour.”

In Leadership in Turbulent Times, Doris Kearns Goodwin tells us: “Any man who has been successful, [Theodore] Roosevelt repeatedly said, has leapt at opportunities chance provides.”

The very last Note I created (earlier this morning!) was on Matt Higgins’s Burn the Boats. He echoes this wisdom when he tells us: “Opportunity is not an inexhaustible resource, and when you see an opening you have to take advantage.”

And: “I’ve seen hesitation kill more deals than speed ever will. And when you hesitate, or when you hedge, or when you divide your attention between your goal and the safety net you think you need to build, it all just begs the question: What are you waiting for?”

100 Percent, 100 Percent of the Time

“As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, ‘If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music.’

I was just a porter, but I never forgot: That job was not who I was; it was simply what I was given to do.

I made the deliberate and intentional decision to be the absolute best at doing this job. No one would ever be a better porter, period. And no one would study the day-to-day operations of a health club better than I, from my unique vantage point of seeing it from the ground up.

Within six months, I was the club’s assistant manager.

Your commitment to consistently perform at the highest level possible, to project a positive attitude, will support your quest to climb to the top of any industry.

It’s one of the most productive habits you can ever develop—one of the most important things that I’m going to say to you in this book: Practice, train, and rehearse giving 100 percent, 100 percent of the time.”

You activate your Soul Force like that all day every day, and there’s literally (pretty much) NOTHING you can’t do.

Greg continues by telling us: “The greatest competition you’re ever going to face is yourself. If you can take yourself on and be better than you were yesterday, you can take on anybody. So imagine this for me: If you train yourself to give 100 percent, 100 percent of the time, to the stuff you hate, how phenomenal are you going to be when you get to the stuff you love?

This is where I’m trying to take you, and as I said earlier, it’s one of the most important things I’m going to say to you in this entire book: If you make it your mindset, your vision of who you are, that you’re going to make it a habit to give 100 percent, 100 percent of the time, in everything you do—if you make that your norm, your base level, your default mode—then on your absolutely worst day, even when you slip, you’re still going to be better than the average person on their BEST day.”

Remember... It’s ALL about giving 100 percent, 100 percent of the time.

And... Know this: If we needed to summarize that sentence in a single word it would be... ARETÉ. Close the gap. Give us all you’ve got. TODAY.

One-Tenth of a Second

“So now it’s all about your beliefs. It’s about how you talk to yourself... It’s all about how you treat yourself, how you talk to yourself, what you believe about yourself. ... I’m not talking about becoming a robot. When you fail, it hurts. It really does. And it should! You should let yourself feel that. I just gave up a home run and I’m not happy. I am going to acknowledge that this thing happened, and then I’m going to give myself permission to feel like crap about it.

For one-tenth of a second.

Hit the start button on the stopwatch. Feel like crap. Hit the stop button.

Now get back to work. If there’s something to learn from the mistake you just made, learn it. Make the adjustment. Hear the words in your head that reinforce your commitment to giving your best effort: I’m capable, qualified, and competent.

And then move on. It’s one trait so many of the greatest athletes I’ve ever known have in common: a short memory. My shot doesn’t go in. I drop the ball. I miss the wide-open net.

I give myself one-tenth of a second to feel bad, and then I keep playing.”

That’s from Chapter #22: “The Value of a Short Memory.”

So many things come to mind when I read this... First, there’s Sean Casey and his call to his mental toughness coach, the great Harvey Dorfman. (See this +1 on Go 0 for 12 Lately? and the Notes on Coaching the Mental Game for more.) Sean was struggling. He called Dorfman. All Dorfman cared about was whether or not Sean was WORKING HIS PROTOCOL.

Then there’s another mental toughness coach, Jason Selk. He’s more generous than Greg and gives his peak performers 60 seconds to whine before they shift to a Relentless Solution Focus.

Then there’s Tom Brady. I can vividly remember watching one of the seven Super Bowls he won forever ago. He threw an interception in the Red Zone. As I recall, the VERY next drive, he was in the VERY same position and ran the VERY same play. TOUCHDOWN. He seemed to run that play out of spite to the Heroic gods for disrupting his plans on the prior attempt. Great performer, terrible short-term memory. Complete amnesia for failures after the lesson has been learned.

How about YOU? Got anything YOU need to alchemize and let go of?

If you feel so inspired, practice some Targeted Thinking. Radically accept whatever is happening. Get clear on what you want. Decide what you need to do RIGHT NOW to get a step closer to getting it. Dominate that next WIN. Repeat. Forever.

If beating yourself up works for you, have at it! If you’re happy being miserable, then by all means continue! But if those things are not working for you... You need to recalibrate, reframe, deprogram, and reprogram how you see yourself and how you talk to yourself.

The Challenge

“More than anything else, I want you to always believe in yourself. But even that is not enough. Right now. I want more from you. This country, this culture, this world, is desperately in need of a new kind of leadership. It needs people who want to build each other up, not tear each other down. Who want to bring people together instead of dividing them even more. Who want to invest in one another, believe in one another, and help one another dream big, believe big, and become big in the most positive sense of the word.

We need a new way of thinking—this fundamental paradigm shift—now more than ever, as we find ourselves as a society facing not one by two great pandemics. We are challenged right now to fight these two formidable enemies at once. It is one of those rare moments that will truly shape our human destiny, and I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that. The stakes really are that high. The history books will record how we respond. I need you to believe that, and I need you to join me in answering this challenge.

I know you’re exactly the kind of person who can help make positive things happen. I know it. If you have ever been needed before, you are sorely needed right now. So I’m asking you to help me push the agenda. I’m asking you not to be silent, not to just sit back and process and analyze the world around you. I’m asking you to help change the world for the better. Beginning right now.

It’s a big dream, I know. But if you share in it, you soon realize that the dream itself will never be enough. I need you to believe, not just in yourself, but in the dream, and to make sure that your behavior matches your beliefs, every single day.

Help me spread the word. Preach it. Teach it. Live it. Every day. Thank you for giving me the privilege and the honor of sharing these life lessons with you.”

Those are the final words of the book.
