#794 Your Diet Dartboard

Throw Your Dart and DO IT!

Continuing our adventure through Mel Robbins’s playfully wise brain and equally fun book The Five Second Rule, here’s another gem.

I actually got up and out of bed last night to jot down the title for this +1 so the idea didn’t slip into the ethers never to return.

Side note1: When I interviewed the creator of Dilbert he told me that he has pads of paper and pens within a few seconds of EVERY place in his house so he always has a way to capture what might become a good idea for a Dilbert cartoon strip. (That might be one of the (many) reasons he’s created over 10,000 Dilberts so far and is one of the all-time great cartoonists, eh?)

Side note2: Nearly 20 years ago, in his book How to Think Like da Vinci, Michael Gelb inspired me to be more diligent in capturing great (and not so great! 😲) ideas in a notebook/journal. I’ve carried something with me nearly everywhere I go since then.

But that’s not the point of Today’s +1…

Here’s what I wrote down on my pad of paper: “Diet Dartboard.”

And this was the passage that was floating through my head as I reflected on all the awesome from the day as I lay in bed with a smile last night at around 8:15 p.m. (Late for me! Hah.)

Mel says: “The fact is that thinking about being healthier won’t make you healthier. Even meditation, which is a mental exercise, still requires that you DO IT. There is no getting around this. You must take action.

(btw: That’s from a section on the #1 thing people want help with: Their HEALTH.)

She continues: “The irony is that in no other area of our lives is there more information, support, research, options, or free content than on the subject of health and wellness. You could Google ‘diet,’ download the top 20 search results, print them out, put them on a dart board, and follow whatever diet the dart hits. The diet, if you actually follow it, will work. The problem is never the diet. The problem is always your feelings about dieting. The same is true for exercising.

I literally laughed inside my head as I lay in bed picturing that Google search for “diet,” downloading and printing out the top 20 results, putting them on a dartboard, throwing a dart and simply following whatever plan you land on.

Yah, sure. There are differences among diets. Some of them worth discussing.

But the fact is, THEY ALL WORK.

IF (very important qualifier) YOU DO THE WORK!

That’s Today’s +1.

What’s on your Diet Dartboard?

Throw your dart. Congrats. You just decided what approach you’re going to follow. 😲

Now quit (over)thinking it and… DO IT!!

Back to Mel: “Every single diet, exercise program, gym circuit, workout class, physical therapy regimen, cross-training routine, meditation program, and yoga flow will improve your health. But here’s the catch—YOU HAVE TO DO IT. And believe me, I get it. I loathe exercise, especially if it’s cold or raining outside. I hate it as much as I hate getting out of bed. Without the #5SecondRule, I’d never do it.

One more time…

Now what needs to get done?

5… 4… 3… 2… 1… – DO IT!
