#1427 Wisdom-Declarations

From Five Legendary Coaches

In our last +1, we chatted about some inspiring wisdom from Darrin Donnelly’s GREAT sports fable: Think Like a Warrior.

As we discussed, that’s the first book in his “Sports for the Soul” series. I read all six in a week and we have Notes on all of them.

Here’s the quick recap…

Think Like a Warrior features a struggling college football coach who magically meets five legendary coaches who each give him ONE powerful idea.

Old School Grit features an NCAA basketball coach at the end of his career writing letters to his grandchildren on how to live a great life.

Relentless Optimism features a minor league baseball player who meets a brilliant manager who helps him break through to fulfill his dreams.

Victory Favors the Fearless features a boxer who goes from down and out to heavyweight champion after he meets the perfect mentor who teaches him how to conquer the seven fears that hold us back.

Life to the Fullest features a high school coach who questions the decisions he made in life and gets wisdom from his dad on the power of following your heart and trusting your unique path.

The Turnaround features a fourth-string quarterback on the worst college football team in the conference whose life changes the day he meets his new head coach who turns the program around by helping him and his teammates forge unstoppable confidence.

Hope you enjoy each of those Notes.

Remember: Sports fables are SUCH a great way to get an otherwise cynical/skeptical/not-that-into-self-development person into this work—which is WHY I created all those Notes to share with you and them and why I’m pushing this wisdom so hard!

While we’re on the subject…

And, while we’re talking about Notes on great fiction, have you checked out our collection on Harry Potter? You and your kids might enjoy them! 🙏 🙌 🧙‍♂️

We’ve got Notes on all seven of J.K. Rowling’s classics: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Moving on…

Today we’re going to quickly connect with the other three coaches in the first fable and then capture all five‘s wisdom in a nutshell.

After we meet John Wooden and Buck O’Neil, we spend some time with Herb Brooks (the coach of the US Hockey team that won Olympic gold in the “Miracle on Ice” game) and two legendary football coaches: Paul “Bear” Bryant, and Vince Lombardi.

Donnelly distills wisdom from those five great coaches into five pithy declarations.

He encourages us to write each of them on a separate note card and get fired up re-reading them daily.

Note: As a good student committed to moving from Theory to Practice to Mastery, that’s exactly what I did.

Here are the wisdom-declarations…

“I focus only on the things I have total control over: my effort and my attitude.”

“I love what I do and I attack each day with joy and enthusiasm.”

“I dream big and I ignore the naysayers.”

“I am relentless and I will never give up on my dreams.”

“I choose faith over fear.”

And…

That’s Today’s +1.

Let’s focus on the things we have TOTAL control over: our EFFORT and our ATTITUDE.

Let’s LOVE what we do and attack each day with JOY and ENTHUSIASM.

Let’s DREAM BIG and ignore the naysayers.

Let’s be RELENTLESS and never (!) give up on our dreams.

Let’s choose FAITH over fear.

And…

Let’s make TODAY the day we move from Theory to Practice to Mastery, Hero.

Day 1. All in.

Let’s GO!
