#1522 Not Getting What You Want?

Here Are Two (Potential) Reasons Why

In our last +1, we spent some time soaking our souls in wisdom from Rudyard Kipling’s classic poem, If.

I also shared a link to Michael Caine’s beautiful reading of the poem.

Right before creating that +1, I searched our Heroic app to see if I’d mentioned the If poem before. Somewhat surprisingly, I hadn’t.

But…

In the process, I did find a brilliant quote from Rudyard Kipling in John Maxwell’s LeaderShift.

In the context of paying the price to achieve your goals, John quotes Kipling who, apparently, once said: “If you don’t get what you want it is either a sign that you did not seriously want it, or that you tried to bargain over the price.”

Let’s slow down and re-read that and let it sink in…

“If you don’t get what you want it is either a sign that you did not seriously want it, or that you tried to bargain over the price.”

How true is THAT?

Now…

Today’s +1.

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

More specifically, what’s your current #1, most wildly important goal in your life?

Of course, it could be an Energy target or a Work target or a Love target.

What is it?

(Remember: Happy people are teleological/they have projects and goals that inspire them. If you don’t have one, GET ONE.)

Now…

If you haven’t gotten what you want yet, is it possible that you didn’t seriously want it or that you tried to bargain over the price?

If so…

Check in.

Do you REALLY want it?

What price are you willing to pay?

Get clear. WOOP it. Etc.

And go pay it.

TODAY.

P.S. Years ago, we shared a few other +1s based on wisdom from John’s LeaderShift. Check out these +1s on moral authority, humility, and the fact that yesterday’s home run won’t win today's game!
