In our last couple +1s, we’ve been hanging out with Socrates and Hercules and Epictetus, and, most importantly, the goddess Areté.
She promised us true happiness and the favor of the gods but she told us “I will not delude you with promises of future pleasure; I shall give you a true account of the facts, exactly as the gods have ordained them. Nothing that is really good and admirable is granted by the gods to men without some effort and application.”
So…
I had that line and the whole story of Hercules and his choice in mind as Alexandra and I were driving down from Ojai with the kids to the event in Los Angeles.
Then…
What did I see?
I saw a bus drive by us with the side painted with the inviting words: “Welcome to Freedom.”
‘”Welcome to Freedom”?
Wow. That sounds amazing. I’ll take it.
But…
Then I looked a little closer…
You know whose bus it was?
A casino’s.
And then I laughed out loud.
Thank you, Universe.
I couldn’t have asked for a better example of how our modern society dresses up vice as virtue.
That’s Today’s +1.
